I don’t think that the P2P/Obama security issue should be speaking to the regulation of and banning of P2P in general.

If people are focused on the facts of the incident, it really speaks to the reality that business computer systems need to be used for just that, and regulated at the very least in industries where there is sensitive information that is being handled.

To often either the IT departments or the upper management (owners/partners included) try to skirt standard application policy restrictions so that people are not putting non-business applications on company computer systems. This also includes visiting non-business oriented sites. Without these regulations in place and appropriately enforced, it is always just a matter of time before issues like this appear. I’m sure these issues happen more often than is spoken about and get the fact that this came out so publicly is actually a shock to me.

Unfortunately as with the appearence of any shocking news, there are going to be organizations trying to capitalize on the fear and emotion that the news evokes in people. These organizations (RIAA) will use strawman arguments combined with appeal to emotion falacies to push their own agendas in an attempt to get the general unlearned public unknowingly behind said agendas.

We have to be wise about this and understand that what happened with this P2P software can happen to ANY non-business class software where the developers are NOT spending enough time on hardening their software against security issues.

People need to wake up and realize that the RIAA is NOT their friend.

I agree with you Physboy. I just think that the powers to be will overreact.
