‘Green’ Wal-Mart Laptop
The HP Pavilion HDX 18 isn’t the only media center laptop to receivea widescreen in the 16-by-9 form factor, as seen on the Toshiba Qosmio G55-Q802 and the Acer Aspire 8920G. HP today announced a smaller version of the 18 called the HDX 16, sporting a 16-inch widescreen anda similar metallic finish and chrome interior. HP’s signature imprint finish not only protects the lid from scratches, but the “flowing linear pattern,” as the company calls the design, also enhances the reflective qualities of the metallic finish. Its weight starts at 7.4 pounds with a 6-cell battery. A 12-cell battery, as usual, is available with the 16 as well.
Though not as impressive as the 18′s 1080p screen resolution, the
HDX 16 will start off at 1,366-by-768, with plans of offering higher
resolution in the near future. The system runs on Intel’s latest
Centrino 2 platform, but configuration options are limited at this
launch. A 2.26-GHz Core 2 Duo P8400 processor, 4GB of DDR2 memory, and
an nVidia GeForce 9600M GT graphics card will be your only options for
now.
The HDX 16 also comes with a 320GB hard drive, optional TV tuner, and
an eSATA port. HP even figured out how to squeeze in a numeric keypad
adjacent to the keyboard. Though cramped, the keypad is a great
addition for gamers and number crunchers.
In addition, HP is strengthening its partnership with Wal-Mart by
launching the HP Pavilion dv6929wm-b, which will be sold exclusively at
the retail giant. With your purchase, you’ll receive a messenger bag
made of recycled fibers. The HP Protect Messenger bag is eco-friendly,
reducing a standard laptop’s packaging waste by 97 percent. The laptop
itself can also be recycled (when it can no longer be used) through
HP’s free recycling program.
Although considered a Wal-Mart special, the parts running underneath
are respectable. The system runs a 2-GHz AMD Turion X2 TL-60 processor,
a 250GB hard drive, and the nVidia GeForce Go 7150 integrated graphics
chipset. You also get 64-bit Windows Vista Home Premium to take
advantage of the entire 4GB of memory it comes with. The 15.4-inch
widescreen is of the 16-by-10 form factor, with a resolution of
1,280-by-800 or WXGA. It tips the scales at 6.1 pounds with a 6-cell
battery and a starting price of $1,049.
